July 11, 2006 (Minneapolis, MN) —National Association For Continence (NAFC) presents its Continence Care Champion (CCC) award to a stellar performer who excels in her field due to personal contributions in research, clinical practice, and education. On Sunday, June 25, Melissa Ross, NAFC membership and fund development manager, granted Katherine Moore, MD with this honor on behalf of the organization. Dr. Moore is now one of two non-clinician recipients of a NAFC CCC award. Thus far, only 34 of such awards exist.

NAFC bestows its CCC award solely to those who specialize in bladder or bowel health. The nomination process for this accolade is such that the WOCN Board of Directors selects members within their society who have a long history of improving patients’ lives and the clinical practices of industry peers. Consequently, a specially chosen committee within the NAFC Board of Directors chooses one recipient.

Dr. Moore is known for her passion for teaching, services on education and industry committees, and dedication through volunteering for several organizations that promote continence care. Her research includes a gamut of medical conditions that men, women, and children experience. She strengthens our health care system through constant instruction. As NAFC Executive Director, Nancy Muller, states, “[Dr. Moore] is an academician who has undoubtedly enhanced the professional lives of established health care providers throughout the United States and Canada.”

Margaret Goldberg, MD, WOCN president, shares her gratification, announcing, “Dr. Moore has ambition that propels her through each challenge she embarks. WOCN proudly supports her efforts.” Her initiatives enlighten others, as she communicates her discoveries regarding bladder health topics including the prediction of persistent post-prostatectomy incontinence, clean intermittent catheterization, penile compression devices, and bulking agents.

Her clinical areas are urology, urinary incontinence, and prostate cancer. Dr. Moore was recently promoted to Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. She has earned many degrees, including a bachelor of nursing degree from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada. She also has a master of nursing and medical degree, which were both acquired at the University of Alberta. Dr. Moore is published in an array of peer-reviewed journals.

Though this award focuses on an eminent member of WOCN, other medical organizations are involved in NAFC’s CCC award program as well. These groups include: American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS), Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU), American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), Society of Urogynecologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA), Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), American Geriatrics Society (AGS), American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health (NPWH), and Society of Women in Urology (SWIU).
