Dr. Edward McGuire Continence Care Champion

March 7, 2007 (Charleston, SC) - The National Association For Continence (NAFC) proudly bestowed its Continence Care Champion (CCC) award to Edward J. McGuire, MD, a leading expert in Urology and member of the Society of Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU).

Dr. McGuire now joins a highly respectable group, consisting of only two other members of SUFU who have been honored with a NAFC CCC award. NAFC Membership and Fund Development Manager, Melissa Ross, presented the honor on Friday, February 24, at the SUFU Winter Meeting in San Diego, CA. Pfizer, the makers of Detrol LA, sponsored this reward.

This award recognizes a healthcare provider who is highly distinguished in research, enrichment of clinical practice, and education with achievements meaningful to continence care. To begin this process, the SUFU Board of Directors nominated society members who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to education to be considered for the accolade. A specially selected group from the NAFC Board of Directors then chose one recipient from the group of accomplished nominees. Dr. McGuire holds an impressive training background. After acquiring his medical degree at Wayne State University in Michigan, training at Yale, and completing fellowship at London Hospital, Dr. McGuire began his academic career by attaining the position of full professor while Chief Resident of Urology at Yale. At this point in his career, he realized his interest in the neural conditions that affect bladder and urethral function. He continued to thrive in his career, becoming Head of Surgery in Urology at the University of Michigan and later the Director of Urology at the University of Texas. He has returned to Ann Arbor where he is now Professor of Surgery in the Section of Urology at the University of Michigan.

Dr. McGuire has spent more than four decades fully focusing on continence care. He has completed extensive research in bladder and urethral function, vaginal prolapse, and methods to treat urinary incontinence. Dr. McGuire has developed surgical treatments for incontinence and advanced knowledge that bladder pressure affects all aspects of female urology. He has spent his entire career involved in the cutting edge of medicine, helping to develop injectable agents for incontinence and improving reconstructive urologic surgery. He is Co-Director of the Evanston Continence Center, a role model for comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for adult female patients. NAFC Executive Director, Nancy Muller, expresses her appreciation for Dr. McGuire's work and the subsequent advances in continence care by explaining, [Dr. McGuire's] strides have propelled this industry, motivated other healthcare professionals to progress in their own explorations, and given hope to those who live with bladder dysfunction and pelvic floor disorders. He is a true innovator. Though this award focuses on a notable member of SUFU, various other medical organizations are involved with NAFC's CCC award program as well. These groups include: American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS), Society of Urogynecologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA), Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), American Geriatrics Society (AGS), American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH), Society of Women in Urology (SWIU), Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) and, most recently, the Association of Physician Assistants in Obstetrics and Gynecology (APAOG).

About Society of Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU) The purposes of this Society are to improve the art and science of Urology through basic and applied clinical research in urodynamics and neurourology, voiding function and dysfunction, female urology and pelvic floor dysfunction, and to disseminate and teach these concepts. Urodynamics means the study of the transport, storage, and expulsion of urine.
