Kathryn Burgio, PhD, Continence Care Champion
At the American Urogynecological Society (AUGS) Annual Meeting, National Association For Continence (NAFC) Executive Director Nancy Muller presented Kathryn Burgio, PhD with the organization’s latest continence care champion (CCC) award on Saturday, September 29, in Hollywood, Florida.
October 4, 2007 (Charleston, SC) — The honor is based
on contributions in the field of incontinence towards research, education, and advances in clinical practice. Individuals are nominated
by members of the society and an award recipient is then selected by representatives of NAFC’s Board of Directors.
Kathryn Burgio, PhD, is a behavioral psychologist and an established investigator with 25 years of research experience in
gerontology and geriatric medicine. Her research agenda particularly focuses on urinary incontinence and has included investigations of
its prevalence and risk factors and clinical studies of the effectiveness of behavioral treatment with a variety of populations. She has
published extensively in the field of incontinence and is an international expert on behavioral intervention.
Dr.
Burgio completed her doctoral training at the University of Notre Dame and a fellowship in Behavioral Medicine at the National Institute
on Aging. She is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Director of the Social and Behavioral Sciences
Section in the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine, Director of the UAB Continence Program, and Director of Research for the
UAB Genitourinary Disorders Center. AUGS President Ingrid Nygaard, MD recognized the presentation of this award by stating, “[Dr.
Burgio] continually makes a significant strides in healthcare. She is fundamental in improving patient care.”
