William E. Whitehead, PhD, Received Master’s Award From ACG
The current theme of NAFC’s monthly e-newsletter, Quality Care®, is fecal incontinence (FI). In honor of this theme we would like to share information about an award given to a member of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) that has excelled in his work of studying FI and related disorders.
Each year the ACG recognizes a few members as Masters of the ACG for their work in their related fields. William E. Whitehead, PhD, recently received this recognition for his clinical research. He has studied the causes and treatment of FI in special populations such as spina bifida and the elderly, the causes and treatment of constipation, treatment of rumination syndrome in developmentally disabled children, the role of visceral perception in IBS, comorbidity of IBS with other disorders and psychological and behavioral treatment of IBS.
"The ACG award is richly deserved. Dr. Whitead has devoted decades to advancing knowledge about FI and related disorders, to the benefit of countless patients and their families," stated Kathryn Burgio, PhD, professor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and part of the care team at the first NAFC Center of Excellence: Continence Care in the US, the UAB Continence Clinic.
